John Cheever

John Cheever (1912-1982), unul dintre cei mai importanti scriitori americani, si-a inceput cariera literara scriind povestiri pentru publicatii precum The New Republic si The New Yorker. A debutat in volum cu The Way Some People Live (1943), urmat de The Enormous Radio and Other Stories (1953). A scris mai multe romane: The Wapshot Chronicle (1957), recompensat cu National Book Award, The Wapshot Scandal (1964), distins cu Howell's Medal for Fiction, Bullet Park (1969), Falconer (1977), Oh, What a Paradise It Seems (1982). A semnat si volumele de proza scurta The Housebreaker of Shady Hill (1958), Some People, Places, and Things That Will not Appear in My Next Novel (1961), The Brigadier and the Golf Widow (1964) si The Stories of John Cheever (1978), care i-a adus Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award si American Book Award. In literatura sa, John Cheever, supranumit „un Cehov al suburbiilor“, a ironizat societatea contemporana americana, accentuandu-i adesea tragismul.
